Artist’s Biography

Gianfranco Meggiato was born in Venice in 1963, where he attended the Istituto Statale d’Arte (art college) for five years, studying stone, bronze, wood, and ceramic sculpture.  He exhibited his works when still very young in two group exhibitions, in 1979 and 1984, at the Galleria Comunale Bevilacqua La Masa, located in St Mark’s Square, Venice, where he showed sculptures in stone and semi-refractory material. Since 1998 Gianfranco Meggiato has participated without interruption in a long series of exhibitions, shows and fairs in Italy and abroad.

Artist’s Statement

Luca Beatrice refers to my work as “liquid sculpture”. Vittorio Sgarbi says of it that “in these structures air itself plays the leading role, becoming a structural component that defines the dynamic, volatile course of bronze”. Paolo Levi maintains that my works aim “to explain and sing the praises of the non-visible in a poetic manner”. It is interesting to note how the definitions given by these three renowned critics point to the intrinsically Venetian nature of my work and it is true that, often quite unconsciously, one does absorb the artistic traditions, history, and culture of one’s own city. My sculptures do indeed appear to be made of a crystallized, liquid substance and the space that penetrates them is their one and only protagonist. Exactly as it happens on misty days in the Venetian lagoon, where water blends into the sky and it becomes impossible to see the thin line that separates the two elements. My latest works also have a typically Venetian impalpability and ethereal quality, in which the material almost dissolves, fusing into space and light. Of all European cities, Venice was the closest one to the East and so the Eastern culture also appears in my works. When I look at the works of the great masters of the past, I am attracted to the spatial interpenetration of Calder, the relationship between inside and outside of Moore, the spiritual essentiality of Brancusi, and the biomorphic sculptural quality of Arp. Due to their use of polished bronze and pure geometrical forms, my sculptures have at times also been associated with those of Arnaldo Pomodoro but, as Luca Beatrice points out, my work favours void over solid, thus reversing the great master’s approach. There is also one further difference: while Pomodoro’s creations are geometrical and angular, forming a mass of fissures, ruptures and sharp edges, which make them appear almost like mechanical devices, mine appropriate the biological material as a metaphor of man’s research within himself. My sculptures recall the brain and muscles under strain, and often at their heart is a gilded sphere, which acts as a sort of imaginary point of arrival. It lies beyond black parts which metaphorically represent the course of our life, which may at times be dark and intricate, but which is always essential to achieve inner advancement. I like the contrast between these dark parts and the brilliance of the mirror-polished bronze, which gives a unique, warm light which I feel helps conveying my formal and spiritual research. I do believe that there is a form of spirituality that goes beyond particular religions and draws on an energy of which we are all an integral part: the energy within us, which conveys a universal message that permeates all cultures. And it is towards this that my works strive: the overcoming of all cultural and religious barriers in order to attain true essence. Art must once again give us hope.
